We've had the pleasure of collaborating with award winning artist and landscape architect Walter Hood, and his team, on a variety of projects over the years. Recently, we designed a new website that brings his design practice, Hood Design Studio, to life with a video banner providing a glimpse of the action at this busy, Oakland-based studio.
Many of our clients want us to do the complete overhaul of their website, and some just need help getting the overall creative direction and framework in place, as was the case for Hood Design Studio. After a few discovery meetings with their team, we developed three distinct designs based on their objectives, content and functionality requirements. Once the preferred design was chosen, we trained their internal staff to populate the website themselves empowering them to make updates and changes to content independently moving forward.
Viewers can scroll down the landing page to get an overview of content from various parts of the site
as well as scroll between disciplines and projects without needing to return to the main navigation.
Here is a sample of pages from the previous Hood Studio website we designed. The art direction expresses Hood’s work as a narrative, a vision Walter identified early in the design process. “Art trumps practice” he explained, “the words are anchors for the place.” We designed a landing page for the site with that concept in mind. Random fields of nomenclature improvise into new words and the viewer is invited to see the transformative power of a place.
