Don't be fooled by the cover, this book has one of the most complex, layered, and theoretically graphic layouts we have ever devised. We are working with landscape architect Walter Hood to develop a framework and art direction for his upcoming book, a conceptual dialogue about his theories, philosophies, and the pedagogy surrounding his world-renowned projects.
Our work included many discussions with Walter and his team at Hood Studio to contemplate the concepts and ideologies that the book sets fourth—as well as the various ways it could be interpreted in the academic and public sectors.
How much would art play a role? Was this a textbook, a coffee table book, an art piece? We did many variations on layouts that could graphically express the conceptual nature of Hood's design philosophy as well as graphic solutions and information design. Though always inspiring, at times this project felt like solving an intangible puzzle.
Our work will frame Hood's concepts and interpret them graphically. Since the work hinges on the inferences of conscious versus unconscious hybridity, we devised a double-sided book representing the emergence—and divergence—of these two concepts.
Each discrete section of the book must meet Hood's ideas graphically, while performing the conceptual work of the book as a whole with each page.
For the portion of the book entitled Conscious Hybrids, voices both conversational and essayistic merge, describing and illustrating the graphic elements: plans, drawings and photographs. We designed multiple type styles and image overlays to create a "hybrid polemic" for Hood's theory on conscious hybridity.
The sections in the "Unconscious Hybrids" section were a bit trickier. How could we design layouts that took the unconscious as a model? We took on such notions as "Sampling" and "Implosion" letting the photographic and textual content—and context—that Walter Hood included be our guide.
We are very excited to see the book and Hood's treatise come to life. The book is forthcoming from UC Press.
