Digital world bringing you down? We suggest a visit to your local letterpress studio. Surrounded by the whirring press, the sight of colors being hand-mixed with the eye as guide, and drawers full of the very material that graphic design has been made up of for hundreds of years, your digital malaise can only be replaced by the kinetic energy that emanates from this place!
When we recently ordered a new batch of the AEC business cards, we decided to take our cameras along to one of our favorite printers: Dependable Letterpress in the Dogpatch of San Francisco. From exploring the drawers of lead and wood type, to watching that little metal finger (a pawl) engage the gear on the Original Heidelberg, we admire the craftsmanship that reminds us of the storied history of printing. We always walk away inspired to design for this impactful medium.
For the AEC card, we wanted a tactility and dimensional bite that only letterpress can achieve. We chose to represent our mark on a classic: Crane's bright white Lettra. The all-cotton paper is made from EPA-certified recovered fiber, and is fully recyclable. Crane's paper, we're told, has been used as far back as the American Revolution.
